Clerical and Secretarial

  • Clerical and administrator worker category includes clerks, secretaries, personal assistants, bookkeepers, accounting clerks and receptionists.
  • A considerable number of clerical jobs have been lost as a result of the computerisation of administrative tasks and office automation.
  • However, with increased automation the skills required to perform these jobs is expected to create an increasing demand for clerical personnel who are skilled in the use of computer and automated office systems. These systems include software packages as well as advanced automated office systems.
  • For instance the BANKSETA reports that, while total employment within the banking sector is decreasing, at the same time there is an increasing demand for highly skilled workers. Therefore, there is a need to continue to build on the current education and training supply in the sector, and to provide frameworks for new skills development initiatives in the key skills development areas.
  • The net number of sales and service jobs is likely to rise, as these jobs are not really threatened by technological advances.
