In South Africa we have a National Department of Education which is responsible for education across the entire country. However each of the nine provinces has its own Department of Education that provides public education.
According to the South African Schools Act of 1996, schooling is compulsory for children from grade 1 until they complete grade 9. Schooling officially begins at grade R/0 and ends at grade 12. The National Senior Certificate (Matric) is important when individuals decide to further their studies at tertiary institutions. The National Certificate Vocational, level 4 with two languages will also be considered by tertiary institutions for admission.
